Training for Life provides training in mental health awareness. By training in skills to empower individuals to have the skills to look after their own and others’ mental well-being, we can help everyone to thrive.
Who can attend our mental health awareness training courses?
Our training is for everyone. Our Adult Mental Health First Aider (MHFAider®) courses are ideal for individuals, teams, parents, and carers who want to improve their awareness of mental health. Whether you are living with experience of mental health, or want to feel more equipped to support family and friends, we can provide the training.
Why Mental Health England courses?
The concept of Mental Health First Aiders is a global initiative with programmes taking place in 24 countries. Mental Health First Aid England (MHFAEngland©) is the licensed provider in England ensuring a consistent, high standard and high-quality content is provided in the course.
Each trainer, and content of the course, is accredited by the Royal Society of Public Health (RSPH). With robust research, evaluation, and a worldwide reputation, you can be confident that our accredited courses are provided by qualified instructors with excellent, relevant content.
Why attend a mental health course?
Just the phrase “mental health” has a stigma. The reality is that we all have physical and mental health. For years doing “first aid” courses, related to our physical health, has been the norm. We want it to be the same for mental health first aid.
Nuffield Health Trust reports that 1 in 6 adults experiences a ‘common mental disorder’ such as depression or anxiety. Mental Health UK reports that over 8 million people in the UK are struggling with their mental health.
Being able to support yourself, and others, with mental health issues including anxiety, depression and stress will help increase awareness, remove the stigma and get people talking. This training is for anyone who wants to be better placed to support themselves, and other adults.
Mental Health First Aider (MHFAider®)
Our two-day MHFAider® course will teach you how to identify, understand and help someone who may be experiencing a mental health issue. It will also teach you how to manage and look after your own mental health through increased awareness.
The course is interactive, with four sessions held over the two days. We limit the numbers to 16 to ensure that discussions are held in a safe, comfortable environment with full support from our qualified instructor.
We will help you develop the skills and confidence to recognise warning signs of mental health issues and know how to approach and support someone.
This isn’t about being a therapist or taking responsibility. It’s about knowing how to listen, reassure and respond.
If you support and care for a young adult, have volunteer positions in the community, or just want to help others – and yourself – this course will help you to understand how to support positive well-being.
What will I learn on the Mental Health First Aider (MHFAider®) course cover?
Our two-day course will give you the language, skills, understanding and confidence to help you look after your mental health, and support those in the community around you.
We will cover:
- Language to use around mental health
- Explore our different frames of reference and the stigma attached to mental health
- Help you to understand what good mental health looks like
- Explore the factors that can have an impact on our mental health
- Look at how to support yourself and others with self-care, giving the skills to influence your own mental health and help prevent mental ill health
- Teach how to intervene (including in a crisis), reassure and signpost to further support
- Teach about diagnosable mental health conditions, what unwell looks like and how to spot these signs in yourself and others
- Talk about what to do if you think someone is unwell and the steps to take for early intervention
- Talk about recovery from mental illness and looking forward
Like physical first aid, your MHFA England training is valid for three years. We recommend that Mental Health First Aiders (MHFAider®) attend an MHFA Refresher course every three years to renew their skills and update their knowledge of mental health supports.
