Over the last few years, there have been a number of events that have affected our daily lives, including our workplaces. From a global pandemic to economic downturns and adaptation to hybrid working resulting from this, the working environment has shifted for both individuals and businesses as a whole.
These changes have undoubtedly taken a toll on employees and mental health support in the workplace is an essential. This is why Mental Health First Aid England (MHFAE) launched its new Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) training course in September 2022.
This course provides support, community and confidence from the start which continues after qualifying as a Mental Health First Aider (MHFAider®).
What is a Mental Health First Aider?
Mental Health First Aiders (MHFAiders®) are vital for helping boost and sustain employee wellbeing. The role of a qualified mental health first aider involves being a point of contact for employees experiencing mental health issues.
MHFA England have spent 15 years generating conversation around workplace mental health. They understand being an effective MHFAider® requires learning beyond training as well as support for themselves in addition to the support they provide for others. In their training courses, they will be:
- Gaining the knowledge and skills to spot signs of a person experiencing poor mental health
- Gaining the confidence to support themselves and others
- Receiving the support to feel empowered and motivated to carry out their role
Why Become a Mental Health First Aider?
Becoming a MHFAider® involves training that has been developed with clinical practitioners and grounded in proven techniques; the course content is reflective of real-life, poor mental health experiences.
This method of teaching increases MHFAider® confidence in supporting others with mental health issues, consequently supporting the workplace more effectively in the long term. One way they stay confident and motivated is by receiving support themselves too.
Becoming a Mental Health First Aider
Once you become a qualified MHFAider®, you become part of a workplace wellbeing community. This community, along with the MHFAider Support App®, gives you 24/7 digital support, training resources and other learning opportunities to develop skills for the workplace beyond the course.
From helping organise roles to supporting your own mental health, providing guidance for certain situations to accessing regular learning events, becoming an MHFAider® doesn’t stop at certification. These further resources enable you to grow, improve and continue to perform the role effectively in the future.
